New Democrats stand in solidary with members of the GLBTTIQ community as Pride Celebrations begin across Canada. There is much to celebrate. Canada has been a leader in recognizing the full humanity and full human rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans Canadians, and New Democrats have been at the centre of those accomplishments. We continue to put issues of concern to the community front and centre.
New Democrats are spearheading the call for explicit human rights protection for transgender and transexual Canada by adding gender identity and expression to the list of prohibited grounds of discrimination in the Canadian Human Rights Act and to the hate and sentencing provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada. An NDP Private Members Bill tabled by openly gay NDP caucus member Bill Siksay (MP Burnaby-Douglas) to accomplish these important changes is on track to be debated in the House of Commons this fall.
While much has been accomplished, there is still much to do. There must be no backsliding on victories won in Canada. And New Democrats will continue to press Canada to be a leader in international forums aimed at establishing full human rights and ending the persecution of GLBTTIQ people around the world.
